Understanding sculpture begins with sharpening our awareness of the elemental things that we already know about objects and space.
These sculptures were made by students at SUNY Cortland, where I was teaching sculpture from 2001 to 2006. There are projects about symmetry, gesture, and negative space, relationship of forms to each other and to the viewer. In my classes I emphasized the balance between aesthetic and technical concerns. Sculptors must be dreamers. They also need to be masters of materials and process.
