This gallery is a record of "early" work. Curious how work becomes early in the stream of things. I am writing this 10/14/2023. How is it that we understand objects that are not representational? By their qualities, by their size, by how they occupy space in relationship to our own size. It is innate knowledgwe that we all posess, and participate in, every day in our spinning world of objects and gravity. These objects are like many other things we have known. I was in pursuit of what I knew, but did not yet recognize.
I began working in sculpture in 1978 at the Ithaca Artists Cooperative. By 1980 I was in at the University of Buffalo working out of the marvelous Bethune Studio, Other pieces were done in the studios at Suny Cortland, where I was teaching from 20001-2006. I am interested in looking back at these sculptures at this time because, once again I am working in clay. This is where it started.
