Megolopolis is a a cardboard city built at Artpark in Lewiston, during the summer of 1985. I wanted to do sculpture with kids. My own work in sculpture was all about repetition. I had been interested in the idea of building temporary housing from corrugated cardboard. Corrugated is so easy to form and structurally surprising. Kids can do it.
Materials: large stacks of 5 x 6 feet sheets of cardboard, many gallons of paint, bailing twine, wood lath and a large bolt of red ripstop nylon.
Thanks to the generous support from Artpark and all the businesses that donated materials. We miss you Artpark.
Over two weeks, the structures appeared and space became dense. It was a kid size, thick with webs, stuff hanging, laced together, buildings and spaces. The cardboard was wax coated, impervious to rain, creating real shelter. The layers of graphiti and messages became thick, especially in the hidden places.
The photos here were taken after everyone had gone home, at a point of exhaustion. In that age of film cameras it seemed impossible to be in the project and photograph at the same time. You will have to imagine the crowd of young eager builders.
