Concrete/Industry ( from the beginning)
The sculptures you see here are sand cast concrete objects. The hollow forms give shape to that which they contain; ideas of refuge and equilibrium, seen in the balance between stone and liquid.
Concrete: To form into a solid mass; to make actual or real; cause to take on the qualities of reality; coalescence of separate particles of matter in one body.
Consider buildings, roads, sidewalks, edifices, monuments. We are surrounded by these concrete forms. As the Twin Towers crumbled over New York and the levees crumbled in New Orleans I realized that I have always been reassured by these bold consistent constructs in cement. All the majestic and everyday feats of form, victories over gravity and elements, provide a velvet container for our culture and activities.
Casting in concrete is my attempt to understand these things.
The objects are a gesture of peace.
